Henry S. Van Metre

Henry S. Van Metre was born April 26, 1820, in Berkeley County, West Virginia, to Abraham and Nancy Van Metre, natives of that county. The Van Metre family was among the earliest settlers west of the Blue Ridge Mountains; some were killed by Indians. Henry Van Metre was a farmer in the Opequon district, with a mailing address of Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia.
On March 4, 1847, at Martinsburg, Henry Van Metre and Mary E. Whitson were married The daughter of Burt and Mary Ann (Knight) Whitson, she was born in Harford County, Maryland, on August 24, 1828. Henry and Mary Van Metre had the following children: Mary Virginia Van Metre, April 21, 1850-April 6, 1862; Angeline R. Van Metre, October 29, 1851-August 24, 1857; William H.A. Van Metre, January 30, 1861-May 10, 1862; Markwood S. Van Metre, November 11, 1862-February 25, 1863; and Elijah W. Van Metre, November 13, 1864.
