Joseph H. Van Meter

Joseph H. VanMeter, age 91, of Canton, OH and more recently a resident at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home passed away Monday morning following an extended illness. Born in New Philadelphia, OH on April 29, 1912 he was the son of the late John and Catherine VanMeter. He was a retired salesman for the Home Beverage Co., retiring December 31, 1975 after 28 years of service. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, a member of the Teamsters Local #91, was a past member of Eagles Lodge #2370, AARP, and the Restaurant and Beverage Association of Stark County. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Margaret E. VanMeter who passed away June 6, 2003; his daughter, Peggy J. Gemmato; four brothers, John, James, Albert and Eugene VanMeter; and three sisters, Catherine Solenthaler, Mary Lutz and Anne “Dolly” Arnold. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Flury of North Canton; son-in-law, Anthony Gemmato of Canton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Fr. Bradford Helman to celebrate. There will be calling hours at St. Michael’s one hour before the Mass on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. The Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
