Arthur Van Metre

Arthur Van Metre, 87, Mahnomen, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Arthur Van Metre was born Jan. 27, 1912, in Iron Mountain, Mich. He lived in an orphanage until being adopted by John and Victoreene Van Meter are the age of 4. They moved to Mahnomen, where he graduated from high school in 1929. He owned a tailor shop in Mahnomen. He married Evelina Turnlund on July 19, 1934, in Mahnomen. They purchased the Corner Cafe, which they operated until 1971. Evelina Van Metre died in 1993. He also served during World War II. He was a charter member of Mahnomen Country Club.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an adoptive sister, Edna Purvin.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Circles of Faith United Church of Christ, Waubun, Minn.

Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Riverside Memorial Park, Mahnomen.
