Bessie Lou Van Meter
Bessie Lou Van Meter, 97, Burlingame, died Thursday, October 4, 2007, in a
Topeka nursing home.
She was born October 26, 1909, at Axtel, Kansas, to James Winton and Luella
Evans Fisher. She married Victor Oscar Van Meter, September 26, 1931. He died
December 20, 1999. She was preceded in death her oldest daughter, Rutha Reavis,
in July 2004 and a grandson, David Reavis, in August 2005. She also was preceded
in death by three sisters, two brothers, a half-sister, and two sister-in-laws.
She is survived by two daughters, Wanda Placer, and husband Norman, Kalispell,
Montana, and Betty Wilson, and husband Wayne, Torrance, California; her
caregivers Layle and Isabelle Bengtson, Topeka, Kansas, six granddaughters,
three grandsons, and 10 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 11, 2007, at the Schuyler
Annex of the Burlingame Historical Museum. Burial will be in Wilmington
Cemetery, south of Harveyville, Kansas. Mrs. Van Meter will lie in state one
hour before service time Thursday at the Annex. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be made to Midland Hospice or the American Cancer Society, and sent c/o
Carey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 196, Burlingame, KS 66413.
