Bill Lee Van Meter

Bill Le Van Meter, 64, died of a heart attack Dec. 28, 1999, at the Henryetta Medical Center in Henryetta, Okla.

A visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel, with the service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Van Meter was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Hartshorne, Okla. He came to Alaska in 1969 and lived here until 1997. He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force in 1979 after serving 23 years. While in the Air Force, he did a tour of duty at Shemya Air Force Base from 1972 to 1973. He retired from the military under a service-connected disability.

Mr. Van Meter enjoyed woodworking, knife making, reading and collecting fine books. He also loved music and roses.

His family wrote: "Our lives are saddened by our dad's and grandfather's death. However, we all know he is no longer in pain. May he rest in peace."

Mr. Van Meter is survived by his son, Martin L. Van Meter of Anchorage; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Stacey and Daniel Beek, Laura and Greg Gore, and Holly Alderson, all of Anchorage; grandchildren, Melissa, Aimee and Emily Beek, and Matthew and Westley Gore, Jennifer Corbeil and Alaina Alderson, all of Anchorage; mother, Hazel Van Meter of Henryetta; sister, Barbara Stapleton of California; brothers, Roy Van Meter of Michigan and Jim Van Meter of California.

Mr. Van Meter was preceded in death by his father, Rolla Van Meter, and brother Charles Van Meter.
