Eunice Louise Van Metre

Louise Van Metre, 102, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Pine Forest Nursing Home. Louise was born on the family farm near Unityville, South Dakota, January 24, 1906. She was a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and Asbury Theological Seminary. She did additional study at Vernard College and the University of Mexico City. Louise was an ordained minister and missionary, teaching and helping establish new churches during more than fifty years of service in Peru, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, the American Southwest and South Dakota. Her memoir, From South Dakota Plains to Peruvian Andes was published in 1989 following her last trip to Peru. Asbury Seminary named her Distinguished Alumna of the Year in 2007. From 1974 until her death Louise lived in Beaumont with her late sister, Jessie Cooper. Louise was well known as the lady who always walked daily, wearing a hat, posture erect, with a kind word and a Christian message for all those she met. Louise is survived locally by her niece, Becky Yoes, her husband, Bill Yoes; Beth, Mattie, Lilly and Stuart Yoes; and Juliana and Brad Yoes of Austin. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great, and great-great nieces and nephews live throughout the United States. Funeral services will be held on April 5, 2008, at Kinzley Funeral Home, in Salem, South Dakota, with burial in the Unityville Cemetery.
