George W. VanMeter Sr

Services for George W. VanMeter Sr., 78, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, at Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin. The Rev. Steve Srock will officiate.

Born April 18, 1922, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., the son of Russell and Ethel Adkins VanMeter, he died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Asta Care Center in Elgin.

A resident of Elgin most of his life, he was employed by Modern Painters and Decorators in Wheaton before retiring. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army, and a member of the Eagles Club of Elgin.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Hogrewe VanMeter; daughters, Carolyn (Barry) Poole of Dongola, Ill. and Patti (Robert) Mersman of Peel, Ark.; sons, George Jr. (Donna) VanMeter of Elgin and Michael VanMeter; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Nina (Paul) Connaster of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Delbert and Russell VanMeter.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of the services Monday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elgin Paramedics.
