Harold Van Metre

Dr. Harold Van Metre, son of Dr. and Mrs. E. J. Van Metre of Tipton, passed away very suddenly last Friday night at his home in Beverly Hills, California, following a heart attack. He was a comparatively young man, only 45 years of age, but had suffered for a number of years from asthma, which affected his heart. His sudden going is a severe shock to his parents and friends in the Tipton community, as well as the host of friends and acquaintances in his recent home on the west coast.
Dr. Harold was a graduate of the Tipton high school with the Class of 1906, a graduate of the University of Iowa medical school, and was well known in both Iowa and California. He was a close friend of Coach Howard Jones of California, and was former medical adviser for Jones' University of California football teams. He was also a member of the medical staff of the Santa Fe railroad. From 1915 to 1919 Dr. Van Metre was associated with Dr. C. J. Rowan at the State University of Iowa hospital. He later practiced with Dr. W. P. Whiteis of Iowa City.
The doctor's mother, who had spent the holidays with her son and his family, was returning to Tipton and was located at Denver, Colorado, at the time of his death.
Surviving Dr. Van Metre are his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Van Metre of Tipton; his wife, who was formerly Mary Stucklager of Lisbon, Iowa; one son, Edwin. One daughter, Mary, died ten years ago, and a second daughter, Rowena, preceded him in death last year in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. One brother, Mr. D. U. Van Metre of Mount Vernon, Iowa, also survived.
Dr. E. J. Van Metre and Mr. D. U. Van Metre left by airplane Saturday from Iowa City, to be present at the furneral services, which were held at Beverly Hills.
