Helen Van Meter

VAN METER - Mrs. Helen VanMeter, age 79, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Christmas evening, December 24, 2004. Mrs. VanMeter came to America with her parents when she was ten months old. She learned the language and customs by attending a Greek School and was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church for all her life. She first met her husband, Roy while working together at Baker Shoe Store. With a gift of hospitality and a love for cooking, she passed those qualities on to her daughter-in-laws and grandchildren. She gave cookies to the neighborhood children, and never went to the doctor without bringing treats for the staff. The many children who loved her called her "Mother Helen." While her family was growing up, she helped at school and community programs and also worked on the election board. She is survived by her husband, Roy, whom she married on February 23, 1946; her son and his wife, John and Mary VanMeter; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kayte VanMeter; her grandchildren; Tammy VanMeter, Vicky and Don McConnell, Ted VanMeter, Troy VanMeter, Steven and Tracy VanMeter, Stephanie and Larry Benner, Cheryl and Scott Mullins, Jonathan and Christina VanMeter and Patrick Elmore; several great grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Mary Ralston; and many nieces and nephews. Her sons, Thomas VanMeter, and Roy VanMeter preceded her in death. The service for Mrs. VanMeter will be Thursday morning at 11:00 o'clock at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 330 Lakeside Drive, Grand Rapids. Interment in Graceland Memorial Park. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Building Fund at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Relatives and friends may greet Mrs. VanMeter's family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. A Trisagion Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the funeral home. The Pederson Funeral Home Rockford .
