John Robert Van Meter Jr., May 4, 2003, age 30, of Wilkes-Barre Twp. PA. Beloved husband of Bridget (nee Bates); loving son of John R. Van Meter, Philadelphia and Mary Wiegner Grourke, Bear Creek PA; brother of Jacqueline Van Meter and Kelly, Michael and Erin Grourke. stepson of Patricia Van Meter and Michael Grourke; also survived by aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. John Van Meter May 4, 2003 John Robert Van Meter Jr., 30, of Lehigh Street, Wilkes-Barre Township, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Born July 23, 1972, in Philadelphia, he was a son of John R. Van Meter Sr., Philadelphia and Mary Wiegner Grourke, Bear Creek. He was a 1990 graduate of Coughlin High School and was a 1994 graduate of Penn State University, earning a degree in landscape contracting. He was self-employed as a landscape architect. He was a member of A League of Our Own bowling league. He was preceded in death by stepbrother, Joseph Grourke. Surviving are his wife, the former Bridget Bates; stepfather, Michael Grourke, Bear Creek; stepmother, Patricia Van Meter, Philadelphia; sisters, Jacqueline Van Meter, Norwood; Kelly and Erin Grourke of Bear Creek; brother, Michael Grourke III, Bear Creek; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Thursday from McLaughlin Family Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre with a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth's Church, Route 115, Bear Creek. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth's Parish, P.O. Box 25, Bear Creek.
