Joseph Coull Van Meter

Joseph Coull Van Meter, 82, passed away December 26, 2004 in Salem, Oregon. He was born in Indianapolis, graduated from Broad Ripple High School and attended Rose-Polytech (Rose-Hulman) Terre Haute. In 1942 he left Rose-Poly to join the U. S. Navy's program at Rice University, Houston, TX. He was commissioned and served aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid in the Pacific Theater. He was married to Anna Lee Werngren for 48 years. The couple moved to Salem, Oregon early in their marriage, and lived there until his death. An engineer and manager for Pacific Northwest Bell, he and his wife travelled the U.S. and Alaska visiting their children after he retired. He is survived by daughters, Susan (Mark) Houglum, Lizbeth (Michael) Smithson, Leslie Van Meter, and sons, Joseph, Jr.(Karen) and Charles Van Meter; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sisters, Jane Van Meter Woerdeman, Arvada, CO and Margaret Van Meter Melcher, Indianapolis. A memorial service will be held at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4440 State Street, Salem, Oregon, January 6, 2005 at 1 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Building Fund.
