Lila Van Meter

Lila Van Meter-Shipman, 75, of Springfield died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center.

She was born May 19, 1929, in Springfield, the daughter of George and Jessie Collins Hashman. She married Robert Van Meter in 1948; he died in 1994. She then married Leslie Shipman in 1996; he died in 2004.

Mrs. Shipman worked for the Illinois Department of Vital Records for 32 years.

She was a charter member of South Side Christian Church and was a member of Athens VFW Post 5302 Ladies Auxiliary. She played piano and organ at Riverton, Athens and South Side Christian churches for more than 50 years.

Survivors: daughter, Carol (husband, Bud) Yoakum of Athens; two sons, Rick (wife, Brenda) Van Meter of Cantrall and Rob (wife, Lori) Van Meter of Springfield; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Hashman Jr. and Kenneth Hashman, both of Springfield; sister, Berniece Edwards of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: 9 a.m. Monday, Athens Christian Church, the Rev. Ken Gennicks officiating. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens is in charge of arrangements.
