Richard E. Van Meter

Richard E. Van Meter Sr., Age 90, of Portage, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002 at St. Anthony Hospital in Crown Point. Richard was a Northwest Indiana resident since 1940 and a World War II Navy veteran. Mr. Van Meter was a retired Millwright with U.S. Steel and a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Portage. He was a member of Portage American Legion Post #260, Bonner Senior Center, and was a good neighbor who loved to converse with all his neighbors. He is survived by 3 sons, Richard, Jr. (Lynn) Van Meter of Hebron, Don Van Meter of OH, Jerry (Rose) Harris of Lafayette, IN; 3 daughters, Marlene McCray of OH, Penny (Bruce) Tschappat of FL, Joy Lewis of Hobart; daughter-in-law, Lee Harris of Valparaiso; 24 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Laura Mae Nice and Opal Eichinger, both of OH. Preceded in death by his wife, Loretta (nee Schavey), daughter, Gloria Illencik, two sons, Joe &Jim Harris, brother, Raymond Van Meter, and son-in-law, Richard Lewis. Funeral services are Friday, March 8, 2002, 1 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart, with Rev. Timothy Engel, officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Hobart. Visitation Thursday from 2-9 p.m. with a Legion service at 7:30 p.m. at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel.
