Ezra was a lawyer and did newspaper work for the "Times" in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Was the first of the John Evans Van Metre clan to come to Iowa in 1952.

Served with the 5th Ohio infantry during the Mexican war; Enlisted July 24, 1847, at Cincinnati, Ohio, private.  Appointed 2nd Lieutenant the same day; Promoted to 1st Lieutenant Sept. 6, 1847.  Promoted Captain, May 2, 1848.  Mustered out with Company on July 26, 1848.
Elected to captain of the Linn County Guards of the Militia of the state of Iowa, Sept. 13, 1856.
